A cliff top village with Muchalls Castle nearby. The castle was built between 1619 and 1627 by Alexander Burnett of Leys. A green lady haunts one of the rooms. The ghost is said to be a young woman who drowned, just below the castle, while trying to meet her lover. It has a secret passage to the smugglers cove at Gin Shore.
Between the Burn of Elsick and the Burn of Muchalls is 2 miles of the finest rock scenery in Scotland. The village was originally called Stranathrow and was entirely re-built in the 19th cent.
