At 1,350 feet above sea level this village, surrounded by the bare hills that have given lead since roman times, is one of the highest villages in Britain. Gold was also found here in the past and gold from the Lowther Hills near Leadhills is included in the crown of Scotland. Allan Ramsay the scottish poet was born in Leadhills.
