The village is about 3 miles Northeast of Kirkcaldy. The village used to be called Castleton. The ruins of Macduff's Castle (16c) is near the village and used to be the home of the Wemyss family, before the built and moved into Wemyss castle. During 1898 and 1967 the people in the village worked in the Michael Coal Pit, the pit was the largest in Scotland, however after a fire that causes the death of nine workers the pit was closed.
Sir Jimmy Shand was born in the village in 1908, he was well known as an accordionist and band leader playing Scottish dance tunes....
