Jute, jam and journalism brought wealth to Scotland's fourth biggest city in the 19th century. Located on the north side of the River Tay which is spanned southward by the 1.4 mile long Tay road bridge. Dundee was an established settlement at the time of the romans who invaded this part of the country in 1AD. For over 300 years the city was fought over by the Scots and English in the various wars of Scottish independence. It has been a royal burgh since 1190. Its great expansion was during the 18th and 19th century with a growth of industry,whaling and manufacturing. For the last 90 years the Dundee based firm of DC Thomson has been publishing comics, magazines and newspapers. The most famous are:- the Dandy, the Beano, Peoples Friend and the Sunday Post. The dockland development housing Scott's polar ship "The Discovery" has aided the recovery of modern Dundee.
