Located off the A711 on the River Dee, 2 miles north east of Kirkcudbright. Buildings of note - the Parish Church, dating from 1813, incorporating a doorway from the 13th century Tongland Abbey. In the kirkyard is the mausoleum of the Neilson family. In it are the busts of James Neilson, inventor of the hot blast iron smelting system and Walter Neilson, his son, of Neilson & Company, locomotive builders of Glasgow fame. Tongland Power Station was erected in 1936 in the art deco style as part of the new Hydro Electric Scheme. Thomas Telford constructed the Tongland Bridge across the Dee.... < more >
