On the A9, 21 miles north west of Inverness. Macbeth, immortalised by Shakespeare, is said to has ruled from his castle at Dingwall in AD1040. At that time the town was called Inverpeffer, which is still its name amost Gaelic speakers to this day. Its present name was given by the Norsemen who captured the area in King Duncans reign.
