The name Portree is derived from the Gaelic Port-an-Righ, which means 'King's Port' and dates back to a visit by King James V in 1540. Prior to this, the town was known as Kiltraglen. It was in Portree than Bonnie Prince Charlie bid farewell to Flora MacDonald after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and this provided the basis for the song 'Over The Sea To Skye'.
