The cost of air transport to the Northern Isles is fairly high so make the most of your trip there and do not try and go there "on the cheap". To understand Shetland you must remember that Bergen is closer to Lerwick than any mainland Scottish city. Consequently, there is a very obvious Norse culture and a history closely associated with the Vikings. In this respect, the Shetland Isles are truly unique in UK history and culture.
