The unique (in UK terms) Norse culture, ornithology, history, archaeology and lifestyle of Shetland makes it a special place to visit. The cost of air transport to the Northern Isles is fairly high so make the most of your trip there and do not try and go there "on the cheap". The ferry trip to Shetland from Aberdeen, is part of the experience so try not to go budget-class! Pay a bit more and enjoy the restaurants and bars - and the views. Orkney is a bit easier to get to although you have to travel to the very north of the mainland to catch your ferry.
