Off the A78, Ayrshire coastal road from Largs in the north to Ayr in the south. The town grew in the 19th century around the two bays split by a narrow peninsula crowned by the remains of a 13th century castle. The northern shigle bay was developed as a port and harbour with regular sailings to the island of Arran. The southern sandy beach was a popular seaside destination for much of the last century. The neighbouring towns of Saltcoats and Stevenston have expanded to almost join Ardrossan.
