YesScotland.com : A view of Inverness The City of Inverness, the ancient capital of the Highlands is the industrial, commercial and cultural centre of the Highlands where one expects and receives excellent road, rail and air communications.

It is also a very historic city, which has seen its fair share of dastardly deeds.

To control the Highlands it was always thought necessary to control Inverness. After the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the city was ransacked by the Hanovarian army.

The National Trust's Visitor Centre at Culloden has a fine audio-visual depiction of the '45 Rising and its aftermath.

More of its history can be found in the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery in the town. The Scottish Kiltmaker Visitor Centre is devoted to Scottish national dress - find out the kilt's history and development - and James Pringle Woollen Mill is also a very popular attraction for shoppers
