Ancrum

Scotland > South of Scotland > Roxburghshire > Ancrum

Just off the A68 Edinburgh to Jedburgh road, this very ancient village is dated back to the 13th century by the Cross that stands in the village green. Here the Ale Water joins the Teviot - there are, reputedly, a number of caves on the banks of the Ale which were used as hideouts during Borders skirmishes of the past. Nearby is Lilliard's Edge, scene of one of the last major Borders battles in 1545.

yesscotland.com says:
Nice wee pub in the village. One of the few remaining old village pubs in the area. Also the acclaimed Lilliardsedge Caravan Park with its small golf course. Some lovely, typically Borders, roads to tour around by car or cycle to visit other villages such as Lilliesleaf (village pub), Denholm (two village pubs) and Minto (Golf Course). Mounteviot House over the A68 to the east is open to the public and well worth visiting.
