Inverewe

Scotland > Highland Counties > Ross and Cromarty > Inverewe

Today very famous for its gardens, Inverewe on Loch Ewe at Poolewe, would have been unregognisable to anyone who might have seen it in the mid 19th century. Barren rocks, stunted trees and poor soil was all that existed here at that time.
It was transformed by the laird, Osgood Mackenzie, starting in 1862 he completely changed the soil, planted shelter belts and introduced plants that people did not think could survive in this country. Changing the garden into one of the best examples of a west coast garden enjoying the warm, moist Gulf Stream micro-climate that allows exotic plants to flourish.
