Helmsdale

Scotland > Highland Counties > Sutherland > Helmsdale

The village on the A9 between Wick and Inverness to the south, was constructed to re-house the displaced crofters from the interior of Sutherland during the "Highland Clearances". They were employed here as fishermen using the safe natural harbour in the early 19th century. The bridge over the Helmsdale River was design by Richard Telford in 1811.
