As the largest town in the west Highlands of Scotland, Fort William is the commercial centre of Lochaber, an area renowned for magnificent scenery and history. The original fort the town was named after was built in 1690 by King William III to keep the rebellious clans in order! It has the highest mountain in Britain - Ben Nevis (4,406 feet high) and Loch Morar - the deepest loch, with beautiful glens, forests and beaches in between. It lies at the head of beautiful Loch Linnhe. Fort William offers the modern traveller an great choice for recreation, discovery and relaxation. Fort William has been a holiday destination for generations and its popularity is echoed by its use by film makers and artists in the past. Most notable as the location of the steam train scenes in Harry Potter, the town and area has featured in Highlander, Braveheart and Rob Roy film productions.
