Elgin

Scotland > East of Scotland > Moray > Elgin

Elgin Cathedral. About 26 miles East of Inverness, the royal burgh of Elgin is the centre for administration for Moray. The Town is named after Helgyn, a norse general who founded the town in the 10th Century.

King Duncan is thought to have been murdered by Macbeth in the ruins of the castle, the remains of which can still be seen on Lady Hill, off the High Street.

The ruined 13th century Cathedral, once known as the Lantern of the north, is the town's best known landmark. Elgin's buildings were mostly built after the Jacobite Rising, however there are some examples of earlier buildings in the village.

When the railway arrived in the town things changed dramatically and a 'New Elgin' was created as a working class suburb, meanwhile the middle class suburb, Bishopsmill grew in size.

The Academy school moved in the 1960s and still remains at that site. Elgin is well known for education, tourism, agricultural services and textile industries.
