The Cowal peninsula and the banks of the Firth of Clyde are the peaceful settings for this resort town.
Developed as a holiday resort for the mainly Glasgow holiday makers from the 19th century onwards. It has the traditional steamer pier, woods, walks and a vantage point with a statue of "Highland Mary".
It's two excellent bays provide great sailing for yachtsmen, whose annual highlight is the Clyde Yachting Fortnight in July.
The town is re-inventing itself after the closure of the american base that for decades coloured the mood of the town. It is now a quality destination offering good facilities for holidaying or as a centre for touring.
