Culloden

Scotland > Highland Counties > Inverness-shire > Culloden

Site of the battle that saw the end of the Jacobite dream of restoring Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) in 1746.
On the day his army of over 5,000 Highlanders were crushed by the government forces under the Duke of Cumberland. Culloden stands on a high wind-swept ridge between the Moray Firth and the River Nairn. The present road, constructed in 1835 runs through the battlefield. In 1881 a memorial cairn was built and headstones were erected to identify the graves of the various clans. The site is run by the National Trust for Scotland and there is a visitor centre with tearoom/food and educational facilities.
