Bonchester Bridge

Scotland > South of Scotland > Roxburghshire > Bonchester Bridge

5 miles east of Hawick and 9 miles west of Carter Bar on the A6088, this ancient village which lies on Rule Water, is closely associated with the Roman occupation as the name is reputedly derived from "Bona Castra" meaning "Good Camp". Bonchester Hill (323m) which overlooks the village used has the remains of an iron age fort and settlement.

There is an Hotel/Inn and a few shops plus camping and caravan facilities.

yesscotland.com says:
There are a lot of Roman remains in this part of Scotland as the name "Chesters" signifies - both here and at a village called Chesters 5 miles east on the A6088. Great area for wildlife especially for the timid Red Squirrels which are to be found in the woods and forests. Excellent forest walks are available in Wauchope Forest to the south. Look out for the herd of Highland Cattle just to the west of the village off the main road - not a frequent sight in the Borders!
