Bilston

Scotland > Central Scotland > Midlothian > Bilston

One of the many villages than sprung up in siupport of the coal mining industry just south of Edinburgh.

Bilston Colliery was in fact one of the most famous names during the Miners Strike of 1984 but, alas, it is no more having closed in 1989 due, in part, to the flood damage caused during its neglect during that same strike.

In its time, Bilston Glen Colliery was one of the deepest in Europe and had one of the longest underground roadworks which eventually reached Monktonhall Colliery 5 miles to the north east.

The village is now transforming itself gradually to other industries with incomers moving in from the overflow of housing in Edinburgh.
