Biggar

Scotland > Central Scotland > Lanarkshire > Biggar

On the A702 18 miles west of Peebles. The town is spread out along its main street, one of the widest in Scotland. One of the "Four Mary's" Mary Feming was lady in waiting to Mary Queen of Scots. She lived in Biggar at Boghall Castle, now a ruin. She is remembered every June in the ceremony of "The Crowning of the Fleming Queen".
In the churchyard of St. Mary's Church are the graves of the Gladstone family, ancestors of the 19th century British prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone.
