Berwick-upon-Tweed

> Berwick-upon-Tweed

YesScotland.com : Bridge over the Tweed Although in England, the town has had one of the most turbulent histories of any town in the British Isles, changing hands more than a dozen times.
Lying on the River Tweed which forms part of the border between England and Scotland, it was fought over incessantly by both countries from the 12th century before finally becoming English territory in 1482.
It is a walled town with many well preserved sections dating from the re-building in the 1760's. A walk along the wall gives good views of the town and its harbour.
Within its walls Berwick retains an old world charm with its stone buildings and red tile roofs and cobbled streets. Some churches and the museum and art gallery are worth a visit.
