Doune

Scotland > East of Scotland > Perthshire > Doune

On A84 north west of Stirling, Doune used to be noted for its manufacture of pistols. The Mercat Cross has 2 pistols carved on it. The River Teith is now crossed by bridge but in the days of James IV a toll ferry was the usual method of crossing. History has a story about the Kind who was refused passage as he did not have any money and had a bridge built out of spite for the ferryman!

Doune Castle dates from the 15th century and was used by Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) in 1745.
