Isle of Shapinsay

Scotland > Orkney and Shetland > Orkney > Isle of Shapinsay

Shapinsay is a low lying green island with rich fertile soil, located off the Orkney Mainland to the northeast of Kirkwall, The island is only 6 miles at its longest point, an island of green fields, home to cattle and sheep.

Unusually for Orkney, the island has straight roads and lush green fields in a uniform 'grid' pattern - the 19th Century Laird, David Balfour, imposed this system onto the island to increase agricultural production, his legacy still dominates the island's landscape.

This is a place for relaxation, contemplation with great views out across the Northern Isles and beyond.
