St Mary's Loch

Located deep in the lowland hills of Ettrick Forest, this very picturesque loch, some 3 miles long, has been mentioned by the likes of William Wordsworth and Sir Walter Scott. At its south western point stands "Tibbie Shiel's" Inn, which has stood since 1823. Nearby can be found a statue of the "Ettrick Shepherd", James Hogg, who herded livestock on the hills for many a year. At its northern point near Tweedsmuir stands Broad Law (2,754 ft) - one of the tallest peaks in the area.

The Loch is now very popular for sailing and a Sailing Club exists near to the Tibbie Shiel's Inn on the shore. Informal camping facilities are available and there is also a cafe on the main road.
