South QueensferryScotland > Central Scotland > West Lothian > South Queensferry On the South bank of the Firth of the Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh lies South Queensferry. From the year 1071, South Queensferry operated an important ferry service across the water where pilgrims were allowed free passage on the "Queen's Ferry" on their journey to St Andrews. Ferry services were operated up until the Forth Road Bridge was built in 1964. During the 17th century, South Queensferry was an important port for trading with Europe and from around this time, many buildings still stand today - for example the Tolbooth Tower and the Hawes Inn which was the setting for the Robert Louis Stevenson classic - Kidnapped. The present day sees South Queensferry housing a Yachting centre and being known for its Whisky, Oil storage and electronic industries. ![]() |
