YesScotland.com : A view of Thirlestane Castle On the southern outskirts of Lauder. Thirlestane Castle Scottish Championship Horse Trials are held every year against the magnificent backdrop of Lauder's Thirlestane Castle.

The castle, was originally built as a defensive fort in the 13th century, re-built in the 16th century as the home of the Maitland family. Then as the seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale it was enlarged over the centuries. Today it is still the home of the Maitlands.. Open to the public.
