Tain

Scotland > Highland Counties > Ross and Cromarty > Tain

The town of Tain is located off the A9, 25 miles on from Dingwall and 40 miles north east of Inverness. This ancient royal burgh, is situated about 1 mile from the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth. The area around the Dornoch Firth records some of the lowest rainfall averages in Scotland, which encourages the pursuit of outdoor pastimes, especially golf, played on the Morrich More links to the south east of the town.

Industries including some famous malt whisky distilling, are still important to the area.

The town is associated with St. Duthac, a saint of the 11th century, who is believed to have been born here, the old ruined chapel near the station is reputed to be his shrine, set up to house his bones on their return from Ireland. Buildings of note are the Town Hall, Court House, Public Hall, Easter Ross Poorhouse, and the Academy. The collegiate church of St Duthus, a Decorated building, founded by James III, restored between 1871 and 1876.

Nearby the remains of the Abbey of Fearn, founded in 1230.
