Isle of Stroma

Scotland > Highland Counties > Caithness > Isle of Stroma

Located in the far north coast of Scotland, this small island, lying 2 miles offshore mainland John O'Groats is nestled between the mainland and Orkney.

The Pentland Firth separates the Scottish mainland from Orkney, two islands (Stroma and Swona) lie in the firth, respectively 3 miles north west and 5.5 miles north of Duncansby Head.

The Isle of Stroma, a once thriving island community is today left only to sheep and cattle. A lighthouse on the island was automated in 1996 removing the last human occupents from Stroma, otherwise the island was abandoned in 1961 despite having had a population of 375 in 1901.
