Stranraer
Scotland > South of Scotland > Wigtownshire > Stranraer
Located at the southern end of the A77, at the head of Loch Ryan was until recently the main port connecting Northern Ireland with Scotland.
Created a Royal Burgh in 1617, Stranraer is now a busy ferry port. Its proximity to Ireland has helped the establishment of close links with the Emerald Isle and other areas bounding the Irish Sea. The waters of Loch Ryan provided a safe harbour for yachts and ferries alike.
Stranraer has several beaches, but a few miles away to Sandhead and New England Bay gives you access to miles of sand.
Through the years, Stranraer has served as a market town, seaport, garrison town and administrative centre. Today it is an ideal focal point for those wishing to explore the surrounding gentle countryside.
