Scrabster

Scotland > Highland Counties > Caithness > Scrabster

Located beneath cliffs on the west side of Thurso Bay, at the northern most end of the A9, 2 miles northwest of Thurso.

It is a 19th century fishing port built on the site of a much older Norse settlement. The Bishops of Caithness had a stronghold here in the 13th century castle nearby.

Its harbour, built arround 1850, was enlarged in the 1990s to handle large fishing vessels as well as Scrabster's lifeboat and the ferries connecting Orkney, Shetland and the Faroe Islands.
