Sanquhar

Scotland > South of Scotland > Dumfriesshire > Sanquhar

Located on the River Nith, off the A76, 26 miles north west of Dumfries. It was made a royal burgh in 1598 but only really started to prosoer in the early 19th century with the starting of coal mining and textile manufacturing.

It has historical connections with the Covenanters and with Richard Cameronian, whose followers founded the Cameronians regiment.

Nearby Sanquhar Castle dating from the 15th century and the Town House, designed by William Adam for the 3rd Duke of Queensbury, the Tolbooth, again designed by William Adam and 'Britain's oldest post office', in the High Street, which opened in 1712, are a few of the buildings of note near the town.
