Ruthwell
Scotland > South of Scotland > Dumfriesshire > Ruthwell
Ruthwell is a village on the Solway Firth between Dumfries and Annan, 10 miles south east of Dumfries.
At Ruthwell Parish Church you can see the Ruthwell Cross, a monumental stone early Christian cross of the 7th or 8th century. In 1642 the cross was taken down and broken up, some parts were buried in the churchyard and the rest was used as paving. It remained there for over 130 years. In 1802 the minister, Dr. Henry Duncan (who established the world's first commercial savings bank), reconstructed the monument and moved it back into the church, were it can be seen today.
