The town of Prestwick, famous for golf, has one of Scotland's International Airports with connections to many international and domestic destinations. It is also still a popular holiday resort, its safe sandy beach is part of the 6 mile long Ayr Bay. It has a mainline rail link and a dedicated station for the airport with connections to Glasgow and the seaport of Stranraer, port for the Irish Ferries. Prestwick became a burgh in 1600 and is a popular holiday resort and golfing town. The name 'Prestwick' originates form the 'split' bay on which the town sits and the church of St. Nicholas is thought to date from 1163 but is now in ruins. Prestwick International Airport is important in the town's history and was the British terminal of the trans-Atlantic service during the Second World War.
