Portpatrick
Scotland > South of Scotland > Wigtownshire > Portpatrick
Portpatrick is situated eight miles southwest of Stranraer and for nearly 200 years was the main ferry route to Northern Ireland. In 1947, Thomas Blower swam from Portpatrick to Donaghadee (in Northern Ireland) in just under 16 hours. The Sandy beaches afford views towards both the Irish coast and the Isle of Man. The ruins of Dunskey Castle, built in around 1510 stand just to the south of the town.
