YesScotland.com : A view of Portobello Portobello is situated three miles east of Edinburgh and has been a popular holiday resort with wide sandy beaches. It is thought to originate from a single thatched cottage owned by a soldier who had fought in Puerto Bello in Panama. The town has been the site of many industries, including glass, paper, soap and oysters. To the west stands the restored building of Restalrig Church and adjacent chapel of St. Triduana. In 1870 Sir Harry Lauder was born in Portobello.
