Portmahomack
Scotland > Highland Counties > Ross and Cromarty > Portmahomack
Portmahomack is located on a narrow peninsula in the Moray Firth and grew as a fishing village. Nearby Ballone Castle dates back to the 16th century and to the southwest are the sand-hills named Gaza.
The Tarbat Discovery Centre opened recently and tells of the village's Pictish connections. Tarbat Lighthouse stands 2 miles to the east at the tip of the peninsula.
Nearby Rockfield village is another smaller example of a former fishing community. Tain and its 18 hole golf course lies 10 miles west through an abandoned former war time air field which was closely associated with the Polish Air Force.
yesscotland.com says: Lying in a crescent shape around the bay, Portmahomack is a superb family holiday destination. The golf course (Tarbat - 9 hole), sandy beach and coastline offer plenty of recreation options. Accommodation is not plentiful (2 hotels - the Caledonian and the Castle) but acceptable.
Most of all this small village is friendly and quiet and has fantastic views up the north east coast of Sutherland and as far as Caithness on a clear day! The harbour and "slippie" also offer secluded and sheltered anchorages for boats and yachts.
Good sea angling can be had from either boats or from the rocks between the village and the Lighthouse and round to Wilkhaven.
