YesScotland.com : A view of Port Ellen Port Ellen was established in 1821 by Walter Campbell and is named after his wife. Nearby Dunyveg Castle (now in ruins) dates from the 14th century and was once a fortress of the McDonalds. It was demolished in 1677 by the Campbell lairds of Islay.
