Arnisdale

Scotland > Highland Counties > Inverness-shire > Arnisdale

From Shiel Bridge on the A87 (Invergarry to Kyle of Lochalsh road) take the Glenelg road up Ratagan through the forest, past the turnoff to the Kylerhea (Skye) ferry, past the road that takes you to the famous Glenelg Brochs, past Sandaig (Gavin Maxwell's "Camusfearna") and carry on til you can't go any further. Turn around and go back half a mile and you are in Arnisdale on the northern shores of Loch Hourn overlooking Knoydart.

Arnisdale House was built in 1898

yesscotland.com says:
If you are wondering why go to Arnisdale, then by the time you get here you will already know. Apart from Knoydart which is only accessible by boat although it is on the UK mainland, only Applecross and Arnisdale are so remote and Arnisdale only has one way in and out! Visitor accommodation is in short supply here although there is an hotel, B&Bs and a camp site in Glenelg a few miles back. From Arnisdale, though, you can get boat acess to Knoydart but not on a scheduled basis! The hills behind the village Beinn Sgritheall (974m), Beinn nan Caorach (773m) and Beinn a' Chapuill (738m) offer good leisurely walking and fine views from the top but just across the Loch lies Ladhar Beinn (1019m) just asking to be climbed! If you are such a mind to climb it, let people know where you are going and when you intend to be back - just to be on the safe side.
