Perth

Scotland > East of Scotland > Perthshire > Perth

The "fair city"of Perth lies in the very heart of Scotland, 22 miles west of Dundee and makes the most of it's advantageous position on the River Tay.

Originally, the Romans founded a camp slightly to the North at Bertha, the highest point of the tidal water. Once the capital of Scotland, Perth has seen a turbulent history. In 1651, it surrendered to Cromwell and in 1715 and 1745; the town was taken by the Jacobites.

Many fascinating buildings can be found here, including the restored Church of St. John, dating from 1450.

Author John Buchan was born here in 1875.
