Mauchline

Scotland > South of Scotland > Ayrshire > Mauchline

The village of Mauchline, situated 10 miles south-east of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, is most noted for its associations with Robert Burns and wooden items known as "Mauchline Ware". There is a museum in the house that was occupied by Burns and his wife Jean Armour. Down from the cross is Poosie Nansie's tavern (still in use as an Inn) and the National Burns Memorial Tower is on the edge of the village. Burns was a tenant for nine years at nearby Mossgiel Farm.
Monks constructed Mauchline Castle around 1450 as a base for their Ayrshire estates. The village now has expanded with new housing. Nearby, the Eglinton Horse Trials take place every year at Barskiming Estate.
