Located in East Ayrshire, Lugar really grew in the 1840's with the development of the Eglinton Iron Company.
The Church and the Luggar Institute are the main architectural features of the village. Craigston Square shows examples of the housing available to workers in the old industries.
A cave here was the scene of early experiments in coal gas lighting by William Murdoch who was born in the village in 1754.
