Laurencekirk

Scotland > East of Scotland > Kincardineshire > Laurencekirk

A village in the heart of the Howe of the Mearns, a rich fertile farming land of red clay looking to the distant Grampians in the west.
Overlooking the town is Johnstons Tower, built by James Farquhar of Jonston in the early 19th cent. Laurencekirk expanded under the ownership of Lord Gardenstone from 1764 onwards. He encouraged settlers to come into the area to bring new skills and trades to the town.
He endowed the town with a library.
