Th village has literary connections, the poet William Drummond is buried in the old church graveyard. Sir Walter Scott spent the first 6 happy years of his marriage at Lasswade Cottage. He was visited at this time by many notables, including William Wordsworth and James Hogg (the Ettrick Shepherd).
