This small village will always be associated with early christianity. The first christian missionary to Scotland, St. Ninian was based here in the 4th century AD.
The ruined chapel dates from the 13th century. Withorn became an important site for pilgrimage and was visited by King James the fourth, there is still a religious community at work. The village is located on a rocky shore sheltered by Isle Head.
