Located twenty miles northwest of Glasgow on the River Clyde, Port Glasgow was founded in the 17th century as the harbour and chief custom-house for Glasgow - from 1710 until the river was deepened in the late 18th century allowing larger ships to navigate the river to Glagow itself.
