Located at the mouth of the River South Esk, Montrose has been popular as a holiday resort and enjoyed for it's fine links golf courses and other attractions. The river basin, approx. 2 miles round, which at high tide gives the impression of an inland loch, offers protection to the town. It is also a wildlife sanctuary of international importance. The position of the town behind its basin kept it safe and prosperous during the many wars with England. The Rossie Bridge originally of wood, was built in the 18th cent. and opened up direct trade to Edinburgh and the Borders. The birthplace of one of Scotland's greatest soldiers, James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose. A few miles outside the town, the ruins of Redcastle at Lunan Bay can be seen. Montrose was frequented by the gentry of the county in days gone bye and many had elegant seaside homes built in the town.
