Erskine is on the South Side of the River Clyde about 5 miles north of Paisley. Erskine was one of the first post-war new towns. Erskine House was once the Princess Louise Hospital for Limbless Sailors and a hospital for ex-servicemen and women. It is best known for the site of the Erskine Bridge. It was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 1971and today handles 6,900 approx. crossings per day. The bridge with cable stays is 524m long, not including the 2 approach roads of 68m each. The masts of the main span are 38m high, the steelwork weighs over 11,000 tons and runs for a length of 1310m approx.
