Ellon was an area burned in the 'Harrying Of Buchan' after Robert the Bruce defeated his rivals for the throne the Norman backed Comyns in 1308. After much destruction, rebuilding and decay the Ellon estate was bought by Baillie James Gordon of Edinburgh in 1706.
It was sold to the "Wicked Earl" - George the 3rd Earl of Aberdeen, so called for his setting up no fewer than three mistresses in the area, one of which, Penelope Dering was in stalled at Ellon.
