On the South Side of Glasgow, Eaglesham still remains a fine example of 18century planning. There are many thoughts on the origins of the name Eaglesham although the most popular is that it derives from 'ecclesia - holm' meaning "Church Town". In 1941 the Nazi Deputy Rudolf Hess flew from Germany to come to Scotland to try to negotiate with the Duke Of Hamilton a possible end to the war, however his plane crashed and he was captured in Eaglesham.
