This ancient town is dominated by its 13th century cathedral, standing on high ground above the Allen Water. The narrow streets of the old town have some fine houses dating from the 17th century. The Leighton Library was built in 1687 to house the books Bishop Leighton bequeathed to the town in the 17th century.
